I make no apologies for what I've done or for what I've said in twenty-five years spent in the company of the rulers of I make no apologies for what I've done or for what I've said in twenty-five years spent in the company of the rulers of America,"" Goldwater announces, but precisely because he has been so outspoken, we have heard it all before, and this ""insider's view"" sounds shopworn and familiar. After a brief family history--Polish ancestry, settlement in California, Phoenix department store, Air Force--we move to the national scene with Goldwater's election to the senate. More tangibly, Goldwater tried to help Nixon by finding irregularities in the West Virginia Democratic primary; claims that LBJ ran with JFK because the Kennedys threatened to investigate his finances; and describes his '64 campaign problems with fellow Republicans and the press he denies wanting to abolish Social Security or use atomic weapons in Vietnam.

Historical conservative world view. Historical view point populist of that era. Jul 11, Farfignugen rated it really liked it. This is a pretty good book. Barry's writing in a few spots is meah, but for the most part, he does a good job. The media these days only speaks of the 's in the most glowing and triumphal terms, despite all of the problems that have slithered out from that less-than-glorious revolution.
It is interesting to see perspective from a conservative viewpoint on the problem confronting our country during that time. Curiously, Barry's book could almost, with a few name changes, read like a book from t This is a pretty good book. Curiously, Barry's book could almost, with a few name changes, read like a book from the present day - much has happened, but little has changed. Our country is beset by economic irresponsibility at the highest levels of our government, with deficit spending and tax increases preferred over balanced budgets.
Our current President ran a divisive campaign based on deceit and demagoguery, to activate as many micro-constituencies as possible to launch himself into office - just like Barry says about Jimmy Carter. This same "constitutional law professor" President behaves lawlessly in the face of the Constitution.
We behave weakly before our country's enemies, hoping that appeasement will prolong their forbearance. Elections were rigged in Barry's day by labor union thugs - today they are rigged by Latino fifth-columnists and black activists, with the full, chauvinistic support of Attorney General Eric "My People" Holder. Our pop culture is filled with idiotic celebrities, that chime in on policy issues they have no expertise in whatsoever - just as they did in Barry's day.
The power of the media to destroy its enemies and tell people what to think was perhaps stronger in the 60's though, since the Internet has at least partially broken the cartel lock of the major newspapers, news radio stations, and television networks. A small cadre of business, military, banking, and academic elites secretly decide upon and write our foreign policy and trade policy at the Trilateral Commission, World Economic Forum, United Nations, and Council on Foreign Relations - pretty much the same as it was in Barry's day.
And the prescription for a cure is the same - eliminate big government, deregulate markets to destroy abusive state-sanctioned cartels, impose tariffs to protect American jobs from Third-World undercutting, show spine to our enemies and make them understand that "backing down" is not an American virtue, and scrap the welfare system.
Whether the American people are capable of recognizing the correct path however, I believe will eventually become irrelevant. The two-party system in this country is really just a one-party system, and elections really don't seem to do a whole lot.
Sure, there is much hooplah and holler every 2, 4, and 6 years - but never any substantial policy changes or shifts in the direction of the country whatsoever. Oct 06, Donna rated it liked it. Not a great read, but filled with some fascinating tidbits of US history for the informed reader. If you buy into the official school US history book, you'll miss them. But even a casual interest in the people behind the seat of power, the ones who buy power and influence in the US and around the world, will keep you turning pages in this book.
