I'd like to welcome you to this course, where we'll cover creating our own subassemblies for use in Autocad Civil 3D. One of the most powerful pieces of software you're likely not using yet for land development and transportation design is the Autocad Civil 3D Subassembly Composer.

The Subassembly Composer is a piece of software that installs directly with Autocad Civil 3D and allows for visual development of subassemblies for use in Civil 3D. In this course we'll look at the essentials you'll need to be able to compose your own subassemblies for use with Civil 3D corridors If you're brand new to Civil 3D, I would recommend watching Jeff Bartels' course, entitled Civil 3D Essentials Training and gaining some relevant experience using build in subassemblies before watching this course.

I'm assuming here you already have a working knowledge of the software package, particularly as it relates to using corridors for design. This is an advanced course for those really wanting to extend the functionality of a core piece of design software. We'll start with the most important part of any development process, planning and the process.

After discussion of where every subassembly's development starts, we'll move to building a series of simple subassemblies by using the basic tools of the Subassembly Composer. Next we'll add some complexity to allow you to become a sophisticated subassembly composer, specifically we'll add some visual basic code in the decision making to our subassemblies and learn about what this can do to really impress your boss and coworkers.

Most importantly, though, we'll spend time working on our process and how to use a consistent, repeatable, and thorough planning methodology to ensure you're not having to recode continually or leading down a path that can't be solved by a custom subassembly. This course is generally filled with standalone lessons that, when piled together, will give you a firm grasp on creating your own subassemblies.

We will also keep an eye on proper planning and building subassemblies that are based upon real world design problems. We'll be covering all these features plus plenty of other tools and techniques.

I'm excited for you to join me in what will be a course that extends your knowledge of Civil 3D to a whole new level. Are you sure you want to mark all the videos in this course as unwatched? Follow along as Christopher shows how to define a custom subassembly and add parameters, points, links, and shapes. See a preview of the subassembly geometry, and test how the subassembly behaves with different target values and conditions. Then find out how to make your subassemblies even more powerful with Visual Basic code.

Christopher provides a "cookbook" of recipes for adding decision making, enumerations, switches, and variables to subassemblies, for more complex logic and automation.

Last but not least, get some additional resources for working with the built-in PKT files, style guides, and the geometric looping function new in Topics include: Creating a plan of attack Defining subassembly properties Adding input parameters, points, links, and shapes Testing subassemblies Adding targets Using Visual Basic code in subassembly development.

Use Subassembly Composer – Create a Civil 3D Subassembly

Following with the pattern of our previous posts, in this post, we'll review an additional workflow tool referred to as "Switches" in Subassembly Composer. It's important to know the difference between decisions and switches in Subassembly Composer: Decision: Typically used for two conditions. If it's a fill, do this" type of scenario. Switch: Typically used when there are more than two conditions. It can be used to add up 11 geometry options, the application of which depends on the result of a specified expression. You can create those in Subassembly Composer and switch them out easily in Civil 3D. In our example, we'll be using a valley gutter that has multiple options.
