Jan 22, Alvaro Silva rated it really liked it. I read this book at the beginning of the year and since then I owed to give at least a small "review" of it. This book wasn't mine, it followed me two years ago in an occasion I moved home.
I was never curious about its content, but since I want to read book before I die, I dragged myself in the task of reading it. Surprisingly, I finished reading it in only three afternoons I am a slow reader. It is a quite funny book and even there is a film based on it. The author is from a Estate in M I read this book at the beginning of the year and since then I owed to give at least a small "review" of it.
The author is from a Estate in Mexico called Guanajuato Cuevano in the book. Guanajuato is my homeland. Through the book, I could identify the idiosyncrasy of the society that the author satirize. The people from Guanajuato is very, traditional and religious Catholics , and why not, they are a bunch of gossips. However, those manners have been changing with the passing of the years and now is more difficult to notice them.
The book talks about the adventures of a man who is hired by the local University to give lectures on philosophy. The man was born in Guanajuato but he went to live to the Capital Mexico city long time ago. By the way, I did my high-school course in that University and years later I got a master's degree in one of its faculties not far from my hometown.
Nowadays the University has the aim to become a top University by They are doing quite well actually but I think it is still a very ambitious objective taking into account the short period of time set to achieve it.
Good luck. Aug 25, Christine mccoy rated it it was amazing. It is a great fun book. And when you have lived in Guanajuato you enjoy it even more Feb 28, Rochelle rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: visitors to Mexico and university professors with a sense of humor. This very funny book about life among the well-educated in Cuevano very like Guana- juato, Mexico gives a back stage look at life in the colonial city that keeps changing but in important ways stays the same.
A short, satisfying novel not very difficult to read in Spanish, although a dictionary would be handy. Unfortunately the author died in an airplane accident in the Madrid Airport when he was in his fifties. Jan 07, Alejandra rated it really liked it. I found his historical parodies to be his best, but his characteristic style shines through here.
